Terms of service

These terms are an agreement between you and Bar Buddy (“Bar Buddy”, “we”) for the Bar Buddy website at barbuddyai.com, the app at app.barbuddyai.com, the tutor console at tutor.barbuddyai.com, and the Bar Buddy Sync browser extension (together, the “service”). By using the service you agree to them.

1. What Bar Buddy is

Bar Buddy is an independent study tool for people preparing for a bar exam. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the State Bar of California, the NCBE, any law school, or any bar-review course.

2. Your account

You sign in with a Google account. You must be at least 18. Keep your account to yourself, and tell us at [email protected] if you think someone else is using it.

3. Your data

Your study data is yours. Most of it is stored in your own browser, at the address you use the app on; clearing your browser's site data deletes it there. Settings › Data lets you download a backup at any time. You give us permission to store and process the data you send to our servers only to run the service for you. Our privacy policy explains what we collect.

4. AI features and your own API key

Some features use an AI model through an API key that you supply. Requests made with your key go from your browser to that AI provider, under your own agreement with them, and you are responsible for their charges.

5. The browser extension and other sites

Bar Buddy Sync can copy your own scores from bar-prep sites you are signed in to. Use it only for your own account, and only in ways the other site's terms allow. Those sites are not ours and we are not responsible for them.

6. Tutors

Tutors who use the tutor console are independent; they are not our employees or agents, and we are not responsible for their advice. A tutor sees only what you choose to share, and you can stop sharing or disconnect at any time. Tutors who join the partner program agree to separate partner terms.

7. Founding seats; no payments yet

Nothing on the service takes payment today. Reserving a founding seat is free and non-binding: it holds a place for you and the founding price, and you can simply not buy. We'll email you before checkout opens, and the terms for buying, billing and refunds will be added to this page before anyone can be charged.

8. Acceptable use

Don't use the service to break the law or anyone's rights; don't try to get into accounts or data that aren't yours; don't disrupt, overload or reverse-engineer the service; don't scrape it or resell access to it; and don't upload material you have no right to share, including other companies' copyrighted course questions.

9. Our content

The service, its software and our original study content belong to us or our licensors. You may use them for your own exam preparation while you have access.

10. Changes and ending

We may change the service or these terms. If a change to the terms matters, we'll post it here with a new date and, where we can, tell you first. You can stop using the service at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms; where we can, we'll tell you why.

11. Disclaimers and limits

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability for any claim about the service is limited to the amount you paid for it in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have that cannot be limited by law.

12. Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
